The March 11 quake in Japan was caused at a subduction zone were the pacific plate and the North American plate meet. The Pacific plate moves west and begins its descent into the earths core at the Japan trench.
When the earth moves in such a force like this in the ocean the resulting tsunami can in many cases be just as bad or much worse for destruction and casualties. A tsunami is when the landslide or earthquake in the ocean causes a the water to shift resulting in a wave. Make sure to check back often for geologic events happening in the world thanks. A transform boundary is where two tectonic plates are slideing against eachother. An example of a transform boundary is the San Andreas Fault which divides the north american plate with the pacific plate. This is also whats called a strike slip fault.
This is where the two plates are sliding past eachother. The North American Plate is moving southeast about 1 inch per year while the pacific plate is moving about 3 inches a year. At the curren speed LA will be north of San Francisco in about 100 million years. If this stuff excites you and you want to learn more search the internet for books or kits on plate tectonics. One of the signs that geologists use to predict a volcanic eruption is when a dormant volcano begins to experience more earthquakes on a frequent basis. Before the quiet Mount Saint Hellens blew there was a significant increase is earthquakes from the previous years. This could be an indication that magma is rising to the surface causing shallow quakes just below the surface of the earth.
For me earthquakes and volcanoes are just another sign that this is a living breathing planet that is in a constant state of change. A volcano science kit is a great way to learn about these changes in the earth. Though it may seem like an eruption causes great devastation the fascinating tale of regrowth after an eruption is truly inspiring. Thanks Moorescience
The Richter scale is a mathematical formula that calculates and compares the size of an earthquake. It is measured using whole numbers and decimals. The size of the quake is measured using what is called a seismograph. For each whole number on the Richter scale the energy released is equal to about 31 times the previous number.
There are plenty of science 4 kids to do when it comes to earthquakes. Our world is an amazing planet and it breaths and lives as do all who live on this earth. Lets all take the time to learn more about our world on which we live. Thanks Moorescience
In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, many young children are asking questions as to how and why it occurred. it is difficult to explain these things to small children especially when there are religious fanatics claming that the Haitians are being punished by god for an alleged pact with the devil that was made hundreds of years ago. The best way to address the questions of your children is through science and earthquake books.
These resources will explain why various natural phenomena occur. Not only will your children learn about plate tectonics, fault lines and the intricacies of the world around them, but you may learn a thing or two as well. Regardless of the subject, the best way to cultivate empathy and understanding is through education.
