volcanoeruptOne of the most iconic science fair mainstays is the volcano kit. Volcano science projects continue to be a favorite among school children and serve as a valuable learning tool. While the kit will not entirely why Mount Vesuvius or Mount St. Helens erupts, it will give your child an introduction to chemical reactions.

The eruption in the experiment is caused by combining baking soda (a base) and vinegar (an acid) to create a chemical reaction. Today you can buy kits that offer a more state-of-the-art effect, though the general idea remains the same. When conducting the experiment with your children, it is important to explain the scientific aspect of the experiment and not just use it as entertainment.

prescool scienceThere are numerous reports out there on the data that children learn allot of there skills and influence before the age of five. My greatest desire is that as you start your new family don’t be afraid to explore the world of science with them. You do not need to be an expert science teacher. You do not even need to be good at math in order to have good clean kids science activities starting at such a young age. My most precious moments as a father was when my girls were in there quote unquote “terrible twos” it seemed as though life was truly coming alive for them and they wanted to know every thing that happens and how it works.

We have an amazing array of resource for us online to find out about how things work and our made through the use of the Internet and your local library. I was out trimming roses a few years back and my daughter asked why they have thorns? Most of them have thorns to protect them from other bugs or animals. You can choose to tailor your science activities with the question they ask you. You are raising the next generations of the world that will one day take care of our aging bodies. One activity you can do is find a new form of life in your back yard for there are many more we do not even see and then find a science activity online. There are many preschool science activities like the Magic School bus and National Geographic For Kids. Thanks Moorescience

MSH80_eruption_mount_st_helens_05-18-80_medIt was a calm day on Sunday may 18Th 1980 when suddenly a landscape of pristine old forrest was destroyed in just a moments time. Mt St Hellens volcano erupted with such force that a bulge of magma building in the volcano on the north side of the mountain triggered a 5.1 magnitude quake and caused the north side of the volcano to erupt.

Do some research of  the Mount St Hellens volcano and if you ever plan on bringing the eruption to life, going there is a once in a lifetime event. After you have done your research why not back that research up by choosing one of the many volcano science projects that will excite the kid in all of us, why because I sure got excited when we did our project together. Thanks Moorescience

Kartchner_soda_strawsAre you wondering what to do with your kids on a week they are out of school or just looking for a fun way to teach them about science? Science projects for kids are a fun and memorable way to share quality time with your kids. My children our on a trip traveling cross the country and spent time in Kartchner Caverns in Arizona. One of the coolest things they found in the caves were Soda Straws.

Soda Straws are a stalactite that is formed over a long period of time from mineral deposits left behind from water droplets that leave a trace of calcium carbonate before dropping to the cave floor. Though you may not be able to visit a cave today there are many science kits and science projects that will help you learn more about these cave formations. Thanks Moorescience

science kitsWhat a great opportunity we have today to live in a world with so much technology and tools to enhance our learning of science and education. We need to instill in our kids that science for kidscan be fun and educational, yeh I know those two words can seem worlds apart when your doing a science fair project for school. We all need to let our children dream and encourage them to seek those dreams through science.

One great way to do this we talked about in our last blog on kids science games. Make up your own, go buy a science kit, explore your back yard. Its perfectly OK to put down the paper or with technology out there today from science we can even pause live TV and explore the back yard. Just go out side or in and have some fun and you will be amazed at what you just might learn. Thanks Moorescience

magnifyingOne of my favorite thing to do is to take a look at something through a magnifying glass or microscope. Have you ever looked at your hand through a microscope or checked out a leaf that has fallen out of the tree. This is an excellent quick and easy kids science game you can play with your kids and its free except for the magnifying glass.

Take your kids on a field trip to your back yard or the park and find a few things that you want to know more about. Take out your note pad and describe it to me as if I were blind and I will then picture it through your eyes. Go online and get more information on what you found and then wow your friends and family with your vast knowledge. Thanks Moorescience

science fairWe are almost done with our science fair project just a few short steps to go. Its time to start organizing the information that you came up with in the brain dump and putting them into your paper. work on sentence structure now if your thoughts are not that organized that’s OK it only takes seconds to change that with word or whatever your using.

You have all the information you need to finish your science project now just do it. Please do not wait till the night before its due to complete your assignment. If you finish early take it to your teacher and ask what you can do to improve it if anything. That’s the beautyof finishing early is getting your project almost graded before its due. Most instructors would be more than happy to look  over your work if you ask them, they are their to foster learning. Thanks Moorescience

earthquakeIn the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, many young children are asking questions as to how and why it occurred. it is difficult to explain these things to small children especially when there are religious fanatics claming that the Haitians are being punished by god for an alleged pact with the devil that was made hundreds of years ago. The best way to address the questions of your children is through science and earthquake books.

These resources will explain why various natural phenomena occur. Not only will your children learn about plate tectonics, fault lines and the intricacies of the world around them, but you may learn a thing or two as well. Regardless of the subject, the best way to cultivate empathy and understanding is through education.

science kitSo the big game is now over you might have won or lost but one thing is for sure you now have a break in football to break out your kids science experiment. One of the best things you can do is to open one of the science kits that you got your son or daughter and do some experiments with them.

Ask them what they are curious about and find an experiment that helps them see with there own hands and eyes how things work. Our greatest pride and joy are children have to grow up so fast these days, forget about the grades and homework for a few minutes and enjoy the excitement as science comes to life. metamorphicA metamorphic rock is a rock that has changed due to pressure or heat from the earths many moving processes. This can be from sedimentary or igneous rock that is in a subduction zone and as the tectonic plate starts to sub-duct the rocks get put under immense presure and heat and changes the whole composition of the rock.

one of my favorite things to do in my spare time is take out a science book that have many ideas on science activities and plenty to look at with rocks. Take a microscope or magnififying glass and get up close and personal with the rocks you collected. Start a collection or put them back when your done inspecting them so others may enjoy them as did you. Thanks Moorescience
